The Zenways Method for Yoga Teachers

Are you a yoga teacher looking to deepen your knowledge in an authentic tradition that goes beyond the purely physical? Are you looking for a way of invigorating your class teaching? Are you interested in east-Asian and Buddhist yoga practice and philosophy? This course offers a 7-day immersive journey into the Zenways method of yoga practice.

The Zenways school is uniquely rooted in the Zen Buddhist tradition, led by Zen master and yoga teacher Daizan Skinner. The practice of Zen yoga is concerned with three main themes: (1) physical alignment – Zen master Shunryu Suzuki taught that “The state of mind that exists when you sit in the right posture is itself enlightenment.”; (2) energy – underlying Zen is a conception of the human system as an energetic phenomenon with energy travelling in channels (myaku/meridian lines); and (3) awareness or mindfulness – the Buddha is recorded as saying, “There is one thing that leads to happiness in the present and liberation in the future; and what is this one thing? It is mindfulness of the body.”

This course will give you a chance to reconnect to and expand your yoga knowledge and teaching practice. We’ll cover:

  • Zen yoga movement/asana practice, including opportunities to practice and hone your teaching skills
  • Yoga nidra
  • Reido – spontaneous/natural movement
  • Zen meditation
  • Yoga history and context in both the Indian and East Asian traditions
  • Energy work, including the meridians and their relationship to the seasons and the energy of non-dual consciousness
  • Zen philosophy

What will I get on completion of the course?

This course is listed (here) as an official Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP) course and would give you 90 hours towards your required CE/CPD points. The breakdown is as follows: Techniques, Training & Practice 42hrs; Teaching Methodology 20hrs; Anatomy & Physiology 12hrs; Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle & Ethics 16hrs.

Is there any coursework to complete after the course?

No, the course is self-contained.

Would this be suitable if I’ve already done the Zenways 200hr yoga teacher training?

Absolutely! Part of the reason for developing this course was to provide a way for past graduates of the Zenways 200hr yoga teacher training to reconnect with the material taught on the course now you are an established and more experienced teacher. This course includes all the practice elements of the 200hr teacher training, but instead of modules on learning how to teach there will be opportunities to practice and hone your teaching skills.

What prerequisites/skills/training/experience do I need?

You will need to have already qualified as a yoga teacher (usually through completing a 200hr teacher training course), and ideally you will have been teaching yoga on a regular basis for a minimum of a year. You may have trained with Zenways, or any other recognised school.

Zen is concerned with finding your own truth and expressing that, and on that journey your body and your experience is your wisest guide. Our approach is to orientate ourselves around your path as an individual. On this course we will explore some of the principles that underlie the Zenways method of yoga practice, so you can feel equipped for a lifetime of exploring, developing and evolving, and continuing to find how to teach your truth.

Zenways is the organisation created by Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi to promote and encourage activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing and awakening (satori or kensho – the enlightenment of Zen) in the many different situations we find ourselves in.
