The first kanji “en” means to extend, prolong, “nen” means year, so the two together, ennen, mean “longevity”.
The evergreen nature of the pine together with its endurance have made it a symbol of longevity. Chapter 16 of the Lotus Sutra reveals that the Buddha’s lifespan is essentially beginningless and endless. In Zen practice we come to realise our place in this beginningless, endless life—we find our true longevity.
