SUMMARY:Calligraphy Exhibition - Keisho Nishina
DESCRIPTION:We’re proud to be hosting an weekend exhibition of calligraphy works by the renowned Japanese artist Keisho Nishina. The exhibition will feature about 14 of her works\, large and small\, which will be for sale. \nFriday 9th October – opening night by invitation only\nSaturday 10th October – 10-12pm beginners calligraphy workshop (book here)\, 12-5pm open for public viewing (free entry)\nSunday 11th October – 10-12pm experienced calligraphy masterclass (book here)\, 12-5pm open for public viewing (free entry) \nAbout Keisho Nishina\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBorn in Nara\, Japan\, in 1969\, Keisho Nishina is an internationally recognised Japanese calligrapher whose work is deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and the broader Buddhist understanding of impermanence\, emptiness\, compassion\, and interconnectedness. \nHer work explores the meeting point of artistic expression\, spirituality and Japanese cultural philosophy. For Nishina\, calligraphy is not simply the writing of beautiful characters. It is an act of contemplation – a dialogue between brush\, ink\, paper\, body and breath. Each stroke records an unrepeatable moment\, revealing the state of the heart and mind. Over many years\, encounters with Buddhist monks\, temples\, and practitioners in Japan and abroad have profoundly shaped her artistic vision. Rather than illustrating Buddhist teachings\, her work seeks to embody them\, inviting viewers into moments of stillness\, silence\, and reflection. Believing that calligraphy is both an artistic discipline and a lifelong spiritual practice\, Nishina continues to explore the timeless possibilities of ink and brush as a language capable of expressing what words alone cannot. \nShe began learning calligraphy at age five\, and graduated from Doshisha University with a Master’s degree in Art Education (Calligraphy) from Nara University of Education. She trained under the distinguished Nitten calligrapher Koen Sasaki. She has exhibited at the prestigious Nitten Exhibition and numerous national juried exhibitions\, and regularly teaches calligraphy across Japan and internationally throughout Europe\, North America\, and Asia. \nHer work has also attracted attention beyond the art world\, including being featured in a BBC radio documentary and a documentary film by a Vienna-based filmmaker\, both of which explore the creative process of Japanese calligraphy.

SUMMARY:Breakthrough to Zen Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The three-day (64hr) retreat is based on the “group sanzen” format developed by our teacher Zen master Shinzan\, together with the dyad work of American teacher\, Charles Berner and current neuroscientific research around what has come to be called “the breakthrough experience”. This creates a uniquely powerful combination. Thousands of students have reported life-changing shifts in awareness. The work is stabilised and grounded through the “naikan” Zen practices taught by Zen master Hakuin and detailed in “Practical Zen”. This retreat format requires no particular world-view and has been transformative for people from many spiritual traditions and none. If you are willing to simply face the reality of who and what you are\, you give yourself the best chance of benefiting. This retreat is suitable for those with no prior meditation experience\, but can also be very powerful for those who have an on-going or developing practice. \nCost\nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £100 and £250\, depending on your means. \nIf you have any questions or are unsure about anything\, please get in touch. \nFor more information about our Breakthrough To Zen retreats\, click here.

SUMMARY:Sesshin (5-day retreat) - Shinzan Roshi memorial retreat
DESCRIPTION:This 5-day Zen sesshin retreat will be led by Daizan Skinner Roshi. This year we are marking the 5th anniversary of Shinzan Roshi’s death\, and the theme of this retreat will centre around one of his key teachings of “no life\, no death“. \nThe retreat will include still meditation (zazen)\, movement and energy work\, samu (working meditation)\, and sanzen (1-to-1s) with Daizan Roshi. This retreat is suitable for newer and more experienced students who have a willingness to face themselves on all levels. \nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £350-450 (or £200-300 for Zenways members). In case of hardship in making a financial donation please contact us. No one is turned away through lack of means. \nFor the first time we will be offering the possibility to join the retreat remotely via Zoom. However this option is only open to those that have done an in-person sesshin before (with any Zen group) or attended an in-person BZR (with us). Please let us know if you want to join online when you book\, together with a note saying which retreat(s) you have attended before (doesn’t have to be an exhaustive list).

DESCRIPTION:The three-day (64hr) retreat is based on the “group sanzen” format developed by our teacher Zen master Shinzan\, together with the dyad work of American teacher\, Charles Berner and current neuroscientific research around what has come to be called “the breakthrough experience”. You will be asked to maintain silence for the duration of the retreat – including at night time. This means having no unnecessary interactions with anyone outside the retreat group (including your partner/family). You’ll need to think about how to make a distraction-free space for the duration of the retreat\, putting aside your normal responsibilities\, making sure you’re in a comfortable space and have easy access to suitable food and a good internet connection. You may want to think about putting the money you would normally spend on travelling to the retreat and on accommodation towards your food supplies. Some people rent an AirBnB apartment specifically for the retreat. \nIf you have any questions or are unsure about anything\, please get in touch. \nFor more information about our Breakthrough To Zen retreats\, click here.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique silent backpacking and wild camping mountain journey. Three days walking and two nights self-sufficient camping in wild and remote areas in the Scottish Highlands. There’s a long tradition in Zen of spiritual practice in the mountains; Boddhidharma\, the legendary founder of Zen spent nine years living in solitude in a remote mountain cave. This special retreat gives us the opportunity to share in the experiences of these mountain ancestors\, following their footsteps in some of the remotest areas of the UK. Led by Daizan and guided by Mountain Leader and Junior Zen Teacher Penny Seizan Clay the retreat is totally self-supported\, carrying all your own equipment for the whole journey. The retreat begins and ends in Aviemore and is open to anyone who has either completed a BZR (or similar) or a Mountain Retreat with us. This retreat is limited to 10 places. \nHere’s what some of our previous participants said: \n“What an adventure. And what a journey ❤️. I will remember it forever.” \n“The walking green mountains are still with me. That seed has been sown and continues to grow!” \n“Thank you\, Penny\, for taking us on this inspiring adventure in the wilderness… I’m already missing crossing roaring rivers and waterfalls\, eating at candle light in the bothy\, the sound of all our walking poles on the stones\, the ever changing clouds\, the vastness of the landscape\, us walking all together in synchrony with you safely guiding us through and the delicious food we had on our way.” \n“My head is still in the mountains. What an incredible experience that was. I am so grateful to have been able to share it all with you and I can’t put in to words what it means! There are none that can describe the gratitude I have and the knowing it has reawoken in me. Thank you so much to Penny\, Daizan\, everyone and the mountains.” \n“It was a wonderful experience at so many levels. My feet are sore but my heart is glad” \nRetreat Details\nThe retreat will start and end in Aviemore\, Cairngorms National Park\, and is open to anyone who has either completed a BZR (or similar) or previous Mountain Retreat with us. The walk is self-supported\, carrying all your own equipment for the whole journey. Thus you’ll need to be able to walk 10-15 miles (15-25 km) per day carrying your rucksack for around 8 hours per day over rough trails and uneven ground. There will be some steep ascents and descents with rocky sections\, potentially includuing walking on boggy or pathless ground. The exact route will depend on the weather conditions. \nPhysical Requirements\n\nA good level of fitness is required.\nYou should be comfortable walking on rough\, rocky ground.\nYou should be able to walk uphill for 2-3 hours at a steady\, relaxed pace.\nYou should be able to carry a rucksack weighing approximately 10-12kg.\nYou should be able to walk for around 8 hours each day carrying your equipment. Ascents may be up to 800m per day.\nIf you are at all unsure about your fitness levels please contact Penny to have a chat.\n\nKit List \nA detailed kit list is available and there will be a Zoom meeting around 4 weeks before the retreat to discuss preparation and packing. Camping equipment is available to hire. Sleeping bag\, sleeping mat and tent cost £35. \nMeals\nAll food is provided as part of the cost of the retreat. Most of our meals are provided for us by a lovely local business ‘Stronaba Produce’ and includes homemade granola for breakfast\, wraps and rolls for lunch and sweet treats for snacks. Bring your own tea\, coffee\, milk etc. \nKeep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away\, once in a whileJohn Muir \nOn one year’s retreat the weather was so lovely and warm we were walking in shorts and t-shirts. On another year\, we were pinned down by bad weather\, our way barred by rivers in spate. We took refuge in a bothy\, pitching our tents outside and sheltering in the basic hut for the worst of the weather before we could walk once again. What you can guarantee though\, is that the views will be spectuacular! \nCost\nMeals and guiding cost is £250 (camping kit hire can be arranged for around £50). Recommended donation to Zenways £100 – £250.

This retreat format requires no particulaar worldview and has been transformative for people from many spiritual traditions and none. If you are willing to simply face the reality of who and what you are\, you give yourself the best chance of benefiting. This retreat is suitable for those with no prior meditation experience\, but can also be very powerful for those who have an on-going or developing practice. \nFor more information about these retreats click here. \nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £100 and £250\, depending on your means.

SUMMARY:Mountain Walking Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Retreat Overview\nThe focus of our days will be entering into the spirit of mountain practice; immersing ourselves in the mountains together as a group. Days 1 and 2 we will hike into high mountain areas (weather permitting) with a shorter low-level walk to close the last day. Walking is the focus for our Zen practice led by Daizan\, with extended periods of silent reflection and simple rituals incorporated into each journey. \nWhat To Expect\nWalks may last for up to eight hours. All walks will be on established paths but they can be rocky and rough with steep drops. Ascent (and descent) may be up to 1000 metres in a day – the equivalent of climbing up and down the London Eye seven times. Walks are led by qualified Mountain Leader and Junior Zen Teacher Penny Clay who will hold the final decision for route choice on the day\, dependent on weather conditions. No previous experience is required but a reasonable level of fitness is essential. \nWeather and Kit\nThe Scottish Highlands are famous for being able to produce ‘four seasons in one day’ and participants MUST be suitably equipped for a full day in the hills. Minimum essentials include a waterproof jacket with a hood\, waterproof trousers\, thermal layers\, a sturdy pair of walking boots\, hat\, gloves\, water-bottle or flask and rucksack. A full kit list is provided on booking. \n“thanks soooooo much for organising this weekend\, I am waiting for my train and smiling from ear to ear – there were almost too many beautiful moments – thank you ” \nAccommodation and Meals\nOur group has sole use of the Glen Feshie Hostel (www.glenfeshiehostel.co.uk); this is basic accommodation. Sleeping is in single-sex dorms with bunk beds and shared shower rooms. All bed linen is provided but you need to bring your own towel. There are no en-suite facilities. The retreat is fully catered; all meals are vegetarian/vegan including packed lunches which we will make up each day. We have a shared work rota to help with food preparation. There is a comfy lounge with a wood burning stove\, the hostel is fully heated and there is a drying room for wet clothes and boots. Camping is not available. \nOther considerations\nParticipants who may find the mountain walks too challenging are still welcome to attend the retreat\, we can offer advice on short local walks in the area but these will not be guided\, you will need your own map for this. If you are an experienced hill walker you are equally welcome but be aware that the hill walking is in the context of a retreat experience so you may have to modify your expectations of a ‘big day out’ to fully enjoy the retreat. We ask participants to unplug from social media and messaging for the duration of the retreat\, although you are welcome to use your mobile phone as a camera. \nTravel\nGlen Feshie Hostel is around 2.5 hours from Edinburgh\, 3 hours from Glasgow and 2.5 hours from Inverness. The nearest train stations are at Kingussie (15km) and Aviemore (15km). It is usually possible to organise taxis or lift shares from the train stations to the hostel with other retreat members. \nCost\nBooking is via Zenways. We do not charge a fixed amount for retreats\, instead\, we would suggest a donation of £100 – £250 payable to Zenways at the time of booking. Accommodation\, all meals & guiding costs £325 per person and can be booked with Penny at Mountain Yoga Kinlochleven once you have confirmed your booking with Zenways. \n

SUMMARY:Zen Compassion Plus Teacher Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn to teach a four-week course that introduces\, shares and guides students through the shimuryo zammai – the four boundless meditations of loving kindness\, compassion\, sympathetic joy and equanimity. \nThis is why we’ve called the course Zen Compassion Plus – because most compassion courses only include one practice (loving kindness or metta). Here we have a broader spread of offerings. The four week course you’ll learn can be presented as a foundation for new students\, or as an adjunct for more experienced practitioners. Over our time together\, we’ll explore the sources of these practices\, how they are taught\, how to help students effectively apply them\, and how to help with problems that may arise. \nThis course will offer a powerful and resonant extra tool in your kit to help your students flourish on the inner journeys. These practices are powerful\, pleasurable and time-tested with hundreds of years of practical application behind them. We’ve already established they work tremendously well in the modern world. Not only will they benefit your students\, We are sure you will find then four meditations powerfully transformative in your own life and practice. \nPrerequisites\nThe course is suitable for teachers or trainee teachers of meditation and mindfulness\, Zen and otherwise. You would need to be qualified or in the process of qualifying in a meditation and mindfulness teacher training (not necessarily with Zenways). For example\, you might have attended the Zenways MMTT module 1-1 (but not necessarily submitted the coursework). \n \nThe four boundless meditations\nYes\, meditation and mindfulness can help us to deal with our issues and penetrate right to the source of our suffering to find a truer basis for living. But a huge number of people find this work difficult because of the weight of negative thoughts feelings and experiences they are carrying. To counter this\, the tradition shows there is a deep value in establishing a positive basis within our being. The Japanese Zen master Torei (1721-1792) drew out a suite of four profound and simple meditation practices called shimuryo zammai – four boundless meditations – which create an all-encompassing rebalancing of the negative tilt within the human system. It is certainly possible to go a long way without these practices\, but when you create this positive inner foundation the path of progress becomes smoother and more rapid. \nThe four boundless meditations are loving kindness\, compassion\, sympathetic joy and equanimity. These practices counter unkindness\, jealousy\, callousness\, hatred\, agitation and other states which if unchecked can be extraordinarily harmful to body and mind as well as poisoning our relationships with ourselves\, others and the world. \nZen master Torei took this ancient system of practice\, taught it extensively to his students and wrote voluminous and detailed commentaries on the work. Yet his efforts remain little known in the western world. In this course you will learn about Torei’s teachings and how you can offer them in an accessible and powerful way to your students. \nThe banner image we’ve used here is of the bodhisattva of compassion\, Kannon\, and was brushed by the late Shinzan Roshi.
