Zen Sesshin (5-day retreat) – Fierce and Fearless – Facing Death
Fierce and Fearless – Facing Death: 5-day Zen sesshin (retreat) with Daizan Roshi
Battle-hardened Japanese samurai, Suzuki Shosan (1579 – 1655) left warrior life and became a Zen monk. He developed a unique and powerful approach to practice, calling his approach “Nio Zen”. The nio are formidable guardian figures found in temple gateways embodying anger and aggression put at the service of compassion. Shosan’s practice involves imaginative identification with these nio figures, coupled with particular energywork practices and unflinching facing of the question of death. On this retreat we will be exploring the application of these practices to modern life in order to:
- transform the powerful forces of anger and hatred to positivity
- replace the ultimate fear of death with gratitude and joy
- develop a vigorous and wholehearted approach to living
This work is particularly suitable for anyone afflicted with anger, timidity and other varieties of fear.
Because of the powerful methods explored in this sesshin, it is not suitable for complete beginners to Zen practice. If you have completed at least one three-day Intensive Zen Retreat, you may apply to join this practice and develop your fierce and fearless wisdom.
