Sitting Buddha – Teachings of Reverend Master Daishin – Events in London and Brighton

20 October @ 10:00 am

Event Navigation

Zazen is the most fundamental level of awareness within the mind. It is a pure knowing that in itself is bright and complete. It is the primordial mind that everyone has and is our true nature.

Rev. Master Daishin Morgan; “Sitting Buddha”

Join us for our ‘Sitting Buddha’ practice day – two events exploring the teachings and practice of Rev. Master Daishin Morgan.

Daizan Roshi’s first Zen teacher, from whom he learned so much, Reverend Master Daishin has recently retired from running Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey in Northumberland, close to the Scottish Border after 36 years. An inspiring teacher, he emphasised, “Zazen or enlightenment is not about finding a particular state of mind, for all states of mind are fleeting and cannot be relied upon. When you know who is sitting, you know sitting Buddha.”

In the new monk Daishin’s early days finances at Throssel were so tight that he spent his rest days working at a local leadmine. Years later, after his monastic Zen training in the United States Rev. Master Daishin was appointed abbot of Throssel. A lay practitioner of the time described the conditions, “All of us who used to go there all have our own little horror tales, about the door being open at one end and the snowflakes going through horizontally past your eyes. The zendo then was an old barn, and you really knew when that door was open in winter!”

Under Rev. Master Daishin’s leadership the monastery grew from these simple beginnings to a major complex situated in new growth woodland. The numbers of people who found deep peace and joy on retreat at the monastery are past counting. Now suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, Rev. Master Daishin intends to continue his practice in a hermitage. These events will be fundraisers to help towards hermitage construction costs.

The day will commence with our Brighton sangha followed by another practice session held at our London dojo. The events will be different and each one will be self-contained.
