Fierce & Fearless – Anger, Fear and the Zen Path of Transformation

5-Week course led by Daizan Roshi

This course is about how to transform the energies of anger and fear into fierce love, and how to operate in such a way that you live a fearless, free and vigorous life.

Based on the teachings of samurai-warrior-turned-Zen-teacher Suzuki Shosan (1579-1655), Daizan Roshi will take you through the unique and extraordinary practices that Shosan taught for working with powerful negative emotions. We will look at anger, hate and resentment, which, when transformed in the right way becomes that fierce dedication to practice. We will also look at the forces of fear, particularly around loss and death, which, when transformed, become fearlessness and courage.

This course will help you deal with the deep suffering of hate and aversion and find in its place a fierce sense of love. By following the talks, meditations and additional practices you find what it means to be fearless and will be able to approach all of life with more of that warrior-Zen spirit.

Prerequisites

This course is designed to be of most benefit to those that have seen through the fundamental delusion of a separate self. In Zen they call this kensho (literally seeing your true nature). The Buddha called it “entering the stream”. Perhaps you have followed some structured course in meditation (e.g. an 8-week course) or come on one of our 3-day Breakthough to Zen Retreats.

By getting our first glimpse into our true nature, we realise just what Zen is pointing at. But this is where the journey really begins. This course is about trying to deal with some of the bumps and wiggles that come up as we’re walking down this path.

We won’t require you to prove your level of understanding when booking this course – we leave it up to you to decide.
